Data Over Doubt: Neuroprotective Mechanisms and Clinical Evidence for Acupuncture in Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is complex.
So is the treatment conversation.

Research Citation: Li J, Wu M, Song W, Zhang J, Zhu L. Neuroprotective Mechanisms and Clinical Evidence for Acupuncture in Parkinson’s Disease: A Systematic Review. Parkinsons Dis. 2025 May 11;2025:9739567. doi: 10.1155/padi/9739567.

A 2025 systematic review found acupuncture may support the Parkinson’s brain on multiple levels by helping regulate dopamine, reduce inflammation, and protect nerve cells.

But here’s where it gets exciting… across clinical trials, when acupuncture was added to standard care, patients experienced:

  • Improved motor symptoms (tremor, stiffness, coordination)
  • Better balance and gait Improved daily function
  • Reduced anxiety, depression, and sleep issues
  • Fewer medication-related complications

Translation:
This isn’t just symptom relief.
This is whole-system support.

Acupuncture is not a replacement for modern neurological care.

But if we’re only treating Parkinson’s with medication and ignoring therapies that may improve function, quality of life, and the brain’s internal environment, we’re missing part of the big picture
