A 2026 randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open found acupuncture outperformed sham treatment for migraine without aura by reducing migraine days and improving daily function.
Not “woo.” Not placebo.
Measured outcomes.
According to the article, “Acupuncture was shown to reduce migraine pain and improve daily function after receiving twelve 30-minute acupuncture sessions over 4 weeks (3 sessions per week, ideally every other weekday). Brain imaging also showed it may work differently for different people helping predict who will experience the most relief and functional improvement.”

Let’s talk about the reality of pregnancy that doesn’t always make it into the glowy maternity photos: the crushing, debilitating migraine.
If you are currently navigating pregnancy in the Dripping Springs or Austin area, you’ve likely been told that your options for pain relief are “limited.” Perhaps you’ve been told to “just take some Tylenol and rest,” but when you’re dealing with a throbbing temples, light sensitivity, and the overwhelming task of preparing for a new human, “just resting” feels impossible.
At Indigo Healing Acupuncture & Massage, we view these migraines differently. We don’t see them as a localized “head problem” or an unfortunate side effect of hormones. Instead, we see them as a vital signal from your nervous system, a message that your body is struggling to find its center amidst the most profound physiological transformation a human can undergo.
In conventional medicine, the focus is often on symptom suppression. While monitoring blood pressure and ensuring fetal safety is paramount, the actual management of the migraine often stops at “wait and see.” But a migraine is rarely just a headache; it is a neurological event.
Did you know that for many women, migraines actually improve during the second and third trimesters? This is often due to the stabilization of estrogen levels. However, for those who continue to suffer, or for those whose migraines begin during pregnancy, the body is essentially communicating that it has hit a limit in its ability to maintain homeostasis.
Homeostasis is your body’s internal thermostat. It regulates everything from your heart rate to your hormone levels. During pregnancy, that “thermostat” is being asked to work overtime to support two lives. When the demand exceeds the available resources, the nervous system can become hypersensitive, leading to the activation of the trigeminovascular system and the onset of a migraine.
While we always aim for comfort, addressing pregnancy migraines is also about proactive health. Research shows that women who experience migraines, particularly migraines with aura, have a significantly higher risk of developing gestational hypertension or preeclampsia. In fact, some studies suggest a 40% higher risk of preeclampsia in migraine sufferers.
This isn’t meant to cause alarm, but rather to highlight why “powering through it” isn’t the best strategy. By focusing on nervous system regulation, we aren’t just stop-gapping the pain; we are helping your body manage the vascular and neurological stress that can contribute to these more serious complications. We want you to enjoy this phase of your life, but we also want to ensure your body is resilient and regulated.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we don’t treat “migraines.” We treat the person experiencing a constellation of symptoms we view as a dusregulated pattern. Through tongue and pulse diagnosis, we determine which specific physiological system is out of balance. This allows us to provide a level of personalized care that goes far beyond a generic “one-size-fits-all” approach.
Here are the three most common patterns we see in our pregnant patients:
This is the “classic” throbbing migraine. It often feels like the pain is localized behind the eyes or at the temples. It is frequently triggered by stress, lack of sleep, or even a sudden change in temperature.
During pregnancy, your body’s primary directive is to grow the baby. The baby is an “efficient parasite”, it will take exactly what it needs from your nutrient and blood stores, often leaving you depleted. This is a common cause of migraines in the late second and third trimesters.
Pregnancy involves a massive shift in fluid dynamics. If the body struggles to transform and transport these fluids, we see what TCM calls “dampness.”
Our philosophy at Indigo Healing is simple: Regulation before Resolution.
Before the pain can fully resolve, the nervous system must feel safe. When we perform acupuncture, we are sending signals to the brain to down-regulate the stress response and improve blood flow. We aren’t introducing foreign chemicals; we are facilitating the body’s natural ability to find its own balance.
For our Dripping Springs and Austin clients, we provide a sanctuary where this regulation can happen. Our treatments are designed to be a “reset” button for your physiology. By stimulating specific points, we can:
Conventional medicine is excellent at monitoring for “red flags”, the life-threatening issues. But there is a wide gap between “not dying” and “thriving.” That gap is where integrative medicine lives.
We work alongside your OB-GYN or midwife to provide a secondary layer of support. While they monitor your protein levels and fetal heart rate, we monitor your nervous system and your ability to adapt to the stress of pregnancy.
If you are struggling with migraines, please know that you don’t have to wait until the baby is born to feel like yourself again. You deserve a pregnancy that is defined by connection and preparation, not by days spent in a dark room with an ice pack.

If you’re a parent, there’s nothing more heartbreaking than seeing your child in pain, especially when that pain is invisible. When we think of migraines, we usually picture an adult in a dark room with a cool cloth over their eyes. But did you know that pediatric migraines often look nothing like the “standard” headache?
In fact, for many children in Austin and Dripping Springs, a migraine might not even involve head pain at all.
At Indigo Healing Acupuncture & Massage, we see many families who have spent months, or even years, bouncing between specialists. They’ve seen the gastroenterologist for stomach aches and the behavioral therapist for mood swings, only to find that the root cause is a complex neurological event.
Let’s talk about why pediatric migraines are so frequently misunderstood, the “hidden” symptoms you should be looking for, and how we use the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to bring your child’s nervous system back into a state of physiological coherence.
Pediatric migraine is a complex neurological disorder characterized by neuronal hyperexcitability. In simpler terms, the brain is overly sensitive to stimuli. While adult migraines often present as a throbbing pain on one side of the head, children often experience bilateral pain (on both sides) or symptoms that affect the entire body.
Research shows that approximately 8% of children suffer from migraines. By the time they reach high school, that number climbs significantly. But the real challenge lies in the symptoms that no one discusses, the ones that happen in the gut, the eyes, and even the child’s perception of reality.
If your child is struggling with mysterious health issues, it’s worth asking: could this be a migraine? Here are the symptoms that often fly under the radar of conventional diagnosis:
This is perhaps the most common “hidden” migraine. Instead of a headache, the child experiences intense, midline abdominal pain. It’s often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and a total loss of appetite. Parents often mistake this for a recurring stomach bug or “school avoidance,” but it is actually a neurological event manifesting in the enteric nervous system (the “second brain” in the gut).
Does your child have bouts of intense vomiting that seem to come out of nowhere, last for hours or days, and then vanish completely? This is often a precursor to adult migraines. It’s an autonomic nervous system “storm” that disrupts the normal digestive rhythm.
As terrifying as it sounds, some children experience distorted sensory perception. They might tell you that the furniture looks miles away (micropsia) or that their own hands look giant (macropsia). This happens because the “migraine wave” (cortical spreading depression) is moving through the parts of the brain responsible for visual processing and spatial orientation.
Sometimes the only sign a migraine is coming is a radical shift in mood. A child might become unusually irritable, hyperactive, or profoundly fatigued 24 hours before any physical symptoms appear. This is known as the “prodrome” phase, where the brain’s neurochemistry is already beginning to shift.
When you take your child to a conventional clinic (for example, a pediatrician’s office), the focus is usually on symptom suppression. The goal is to stop the pain once it starts or to use daily medications to raise the “migraine threshold.” While these can be life-saving tools, they don’t always address why the nervous system is so reactive in the first place.
At Indigo Healing Acupuncture & Massage, we look at the body through the lens of Pattern Differentiation. We don’t just treat the migraine; we treat the specific way your child’s nervous system is losing its normal function.
By identifying these patterns, we can create a customized plan using acupuncture and nervous system regulation to help your child return to their best life.
We avoid “woo” language here. Instead, we look at these patterns as clinical presentations of physiological dysregulation. Here are the three most common patterns we see in pediatric cases:
In this pattern, the nervous system is in a state of high alert. Think of it like a pressure cooker. These migraines are often triggered by school stress, bright lights, or emotional upset.
This isn’t necessarily about anemia; it’s about the body’s inability to provide enough “fuel” or nourishment to the brain. These children are often pale, easily exhausted, and their headaches tend to get worse after physical activity or at the end of a long school day.
In TCM, “phlegm” can refer to a metabolic sluggishness that affects the head. These children feel “heavy.” They might complain that their head feels like it’s wrapped in a wet towel.
We understand that the idea of “needles” can be scary for parents (and kids!). However, pediatric acupuncture is vastly different from the shots a child receives at the pediatrician’s office. The needles are hair-thin, and for our youngest patients, we often use non-needle techniques like moxibustion or specialized abdominal massage to achieve the same results.
Our focus is on Nervous System Regulation.
When a child suffers from chronic migraines, their nervous system becomes “stuck” in a state of dysregulation. They are perpetually waiting for the next attack, which creates a feedback loop of stress and pain. By using medical acupuncture, we help “reset” the vagus nerve and promote a state of parasympathetic dominance (rest and digest).
This is what we call achieving Physiological Coherence. It’s not about masking the pain; it’s about training the body to maintain its own balance.
If you are in the Dripping Springs or Austin area and your child is struggling, please know that you don’t have to just “wait for them to grow out of it.”
Migraines in childhood are a signal that the body’s internal regulatory systems need support. Whether your child is dealing with the strange sensations of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome or the debilitating pain of abdominal migraines, there is a science-grounded, holistic way to help them heal.
At Indigo Healing Acupuncture & Massage, we provide a luxury healthcare experience that prioritizes calm, empathy, and clinical excellence. We are led by Dr. Michelle Wendt, L.Ac., DACM, who specializes in complex cases where conventional medicine has reached its limit.
